LAST BASTION
COVERING BIG GERMAN BASE OF BRYANSK CAPTURED BY SOVIET FORCES DISORDERLY ENEMY RETREAT ON KHARKOV FRONT. MUCH EQUIPMENT LEFT BEHIND. LONDON, August 10. A Soviet communique reports more progress by the Russians in their two great offensives. On the Bryansk front they have recaptured 30 more inhabited places, including the district centre and railway station of Karachev, .15 miles east of Bryansk and about 30 miles west of Orel. Karachev is the last bastion guarding the approaches to the enemy’s big base at Bry- ' ansk.
On the Kharkov front, further advances of seven to 8! miles are reported and a number of places have been liberated. Yesterday the Russians knocked out 35 German tanks and shot down 84 enemy planes. A correspondent describes the German retreat in the Kharkov area as chaotic. Immense quantities of German equipment have been destroyed or abandoned and the scene recalls the familiar sights of last winter’s campaign.
