INDIAN TROOPS
GALLANT PART TAKEN. IN LANDINGS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 9. Indian troops took part in landings south of Syracuse on the first day of the Sicily assault, says an Indian Army observer, Muslims, Punjabis, Sikhs, and Dogras, with the help of Highlanders, maintained a continuous stream of supplies in shallow landing craft to the beaches. They were divebombed and machine-gunned by the Germans, but suffered surprisingly small casualties.
Ships of the Royal Indian Navy are now engaged in operations against the Axis in the Mediterranean. They helped the Eighth Army in the recent invasion of Sicily, escorting convoys and protecting troops during the critical period of disembarkation on July 10. Ross Munro, the correspondent with the Canadian forces, in Sicily, reported that after the Canadians had taken the beach during the initial landings, they planted the White Ensign and also the Dutch flag, in honour of the ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy from which they landed.
