WELLINGTON CONTESTS. AN UNEXPECTED WIN. The following were the results in the Wellington Rugby Union's senior championship games played on Saturday:— Jubilee Cup: Petone 16 beat PonekeOriental 5. The win of Petone caused a sensation, being totally unexpected. Athletic 18 beat Wellington College Old Boys 3; Marist Brothers’ Old Boys 18 beat Army 3; Hutt 15 beat Wellington 0.
Hardham Cup: Johnsonville 6 beat Eastbourne 3; University 21 beat Air Reserve 3; Seatoun 14 beat Air Force 8; Navy 25 beat A.N.A. 0.
WAIRARAPA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.
WON BY CARTERTON
The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s senior championship competition was concluded on Saturday when Carterton beat the Combined team by 9 points to nil 'and won the competition. Neither team was up to its usual strength and play was mostly confined to the forwards.
The last appearance of the Air Force team in the senior competition resulted in an easy win against Army at Featherston on Saturday by 22 to nil. Air Force forwards, led' by Henderson, dominated the play although Army had their full share of the ball in the scrums. In the backs Southwick and Hall combined well, and although the handling was patchy on account of the heavy ball, some nice passing movements kept Army on the defensive. Tries for Air Force were scored by Foote, Marshall, Wright and Heslop, and Southwick and Sinclair converted a try each, and kicked a penalty goal. The Air Force.team showed great improvement during recent games and were strong contenders for senior championship honours. In spite of many difficulties the coach, Corporal Mitchell, produced a team which gave splendid displays during the season. The Carterton third grade B team beat College at Carterton on Saturday by 19 points to 3.
