LIE CAMPAIGN
ORGANISED BY GERMANS IN FRANCE.
Instructions to members of the Legion, contained in a confidential document, which has come into the hands of “La Marseillaise,” the French London weekly, have been published by that paper. The confidential circular is dated Toulon, December 8, and tells what rumours whisper propaganda members of the Legion are to spread. “If some of the items appear extraordinary,” the circular states, “don’t trouble about that, just spread them as they are.” These are the main items the “whisperers” were to “whisper in the ears” of the people:— “By attacking North Africa,” the whisperers were instructed to say, “the Americans are taking from' us, per annum, 15 days’ meat, one month’s bread, three months’ wine, three months’ oil, one month’s potatoes, and 63,700 parcels of lOlbs. each for our prisoners.” Another ’’fact” the circular indicated should be spread, is a list of huge quantities of dried vegetables, wine, dates, dried figs, tinned fish, oil, etc., that “Algiers, Tunisia and Morocco used to bring to Franco.” The circular admits that this is an attempt to persuade the French peoplethat the majority of the things they lack today came from Africa. Every Frenchman knows their lack is due to German action. It can be said that, except confidential or secret documents issued to only two or three officials, every document finds its way to London through de Gaullist channels.
