Municipal Innovation.

An innovation in New Zealand municipal affairs was introduced in Hamilton on Wednesday night when the borough council proceedings were broadcast over a loud-speaker system to an overflow of the public in the street. The business of the council was to discuss a notice of motion to rescind a resolution passed by a majority of 7 to 6 at the previous meeting of the council dismissing the engineer, Mr R. J. Baird. The notice of motion was lost, as was also a further notice of motion calling upon the mayor and council to resign, the voting again being 7 to 6. Keen interest was displayed by the public both in the chamber and outside the building. Eketahuna Validation.

A clause in the Local Legislation Bill, before the House of Representatives, validates contracts entered into by the Mayor of Eketahuna and the Eketahuna Borough Council so as. to enable the Mayor to retain his office. An attached memorandum explains that as a result of extensive earthquake damage in Eketahuna last year it became necessary for certain urgent repairs to be made immediately to the water-supply service and other public services. The work required the services of a blacksmith, and as the Mayor of Eketahuna was the only blacksmith within a radius of 20 miles he contracted with the council to carry out the necessary work. The payments made to the Mayor exceeded by a few pounds the sum of £25 allowed to be paid in any one 'year to a member of a borough council in respecst of work performed under contracts with the council.
