CLUBS FINED
FOR BREACHES OF LICENSING ACT. MAGISTRATE'S OBSERVATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. “I have placed what I believe to be the only fair and reasonable interpretation upon the course followed by a large number of not disreputable citizens, who comprise the membership of these clubs. The Court does not excuse, justify or apologise for their actions, but at least those actions in the midst of the inaction of the community and not of the police, for a long period of years, provide matter for the sober reflection of the Court in applying the sanctions of a law which does not command the full respect of a considerable and not disreputable section of the public, and no less are those actions a matter for the reflection of soberminded numbers of the public, of whatever licensing persuasion, who ultimately make the law,” said Mr Abernethy, S.Mr, giving his reserved decision in a case in which four clubs and their officials were charged with breaches of the Licensing Act.
The charges were heard on Tuesday. Liquor totalling ovei- 3,000 bottles was seized.
Each club was fined £lO for keeping liquor for sale.
