Mrs A. G. Wilder, Hawke's Bay, is visiting Masterton. Mr S. J. W. Gill, Masterton, is visiting New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs T. Brown, Waihi, Wangaehu, are visiting Napier.
Mrs H. O. Bunny and Mrs R. A. Bunny, Perry Street, Masterton, are spending a holiday in Napier. Mrs Eric Lees, who has been staying with her sister, Mrs H. K. Mclntosh, Te Whiti, has returned to Auckland. Two Lower Hutt residents, Mr and Mrs G. Mumford, are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today. They were married at Peckham, London, and have lived in Waterloo Road for 32 years.
The engagement is announced of Phyllis, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. S. Hood. Kalfutara, to Lloyd David, Second N.Z.E.F., only son of Mrs and the late Mr T. E. Jones, Cornwell Street, Masterton.
The marriage took place at Palmerston North recently of Miss Mabel Irene Conder, only daughter of Mrs and the late Mr G. T. Conder, Pahiatua, and Mr Daniel Denis Twomey, youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs. D. J. Twomey, of Mangamutu. Second Lieutenant R. S. McNaught, in a letter to a friend in Masterton, stated that he had just completed a five months’ course and been appointed to a warship. He was at sea on H.M.S. Cairo as a radio mechanic when that ship was sunk in the Mediterranean last year. Second Lieutenant McNaught is a son of the late Mr J. R. McNaught, of Masterton. • The death has occurred in Dannevirke of Mr William George Hunter. Mr Hunter, a son of the late Mr and Mrs William Hunter, pioneer settlers of the Porangahau district, was born at Porangahau in 1862. Educated at Napier, he entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand at Waipawa, retiring from there to take up farming. At the time of his death he was farming at Waitahora.
The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Elsie Melvin, widow of the late Mr Robert Melvin, in her 88th year. Born in Elton, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, she came to New Zealand 45 yeans ago and had lived in Masterton for many years. Her husband predeceased her 11 years ago and she is survived by one son and two daughters. The funeral will be a private one. The death has occurred in Sydney at the age of 78 of Mr C. N. Baeyertz, who founded, owned, and edited the “Triad,” a highly critical monthly journal on current literature, music and art, which was published for many years in Dunedin, and subsequently in Australia. Mr Baeyertz is remembered also as adjudicator in both music and elocution at New Zealand competitions society festivals. When the "Triad” ceased publication in Sydney he remained there as a teacher of languages and literary critic, and in later years was heard as a broadcaster. He was well known in Masterton where he acted as judge at elocutionary competitions.
