SOVIET CAVALRY

CHANGE SEIZED ON DONETZ. FRONT. GERM NN INFANTRY BATTALION WIPED OUT. In fighting during the early spring on the Donetz front. Soviet cavalrymen distinguished themselves in action in the Chuguyev area. “Soviet War News" reports. At one stage the Germans brought into action considerable numbers of tanks and about a regiment of infantry in an attempt to pierce the Soviet defence lino and seize a river crossing. After prolonged artillery preparation, several groups of German tanks made a rush towards the Soviet defence lines. German tom-my-gunners were mounted on all the tanks while trucks with infantry followed some distance behind. As a result of skilful fire by Soviet artillerymen and anti-tank riflemen, the Germans lost 19 tanks and then lured tail. The German infantry were unable to keep pace with the hurriedly retreating tanks, got stuck on the muddy road, and were overtaken by Soviet cavalrymen, who fell upon the Germans with their sabres and cut off their retreat. Not a single Hitlerite escaped. Over a battalion of infantry was wiped out amid the hulks of disabled German tanks.
