BOMBING OF PLOESTI
BIG REFINERIES HEAYILY DAMAGED PIPE LINE HIT MANY TIMES. PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW GREAT HAVOC. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, August 2. Pilots, backed up by photographic evidence, report widespread damage at the Ploesti oilfields. The Astro Rornana Refinery, the largest in Europe, is heavily damaged. Large fires were burning when the last wave of Liberators left their target. The Giurniu pipe line was hit in numerous places. The Credit Minier Refinery, which is the newest in Ploesti, producing large quantities of aviation fuel, was completely covered by bombs. The Starra and also the Columbia and Acquilla refineries received direct hits. The lastnamed is one of Rumania’s largest refineries. One pilot is certain his plane scored a direct hit on the Campini Refinery. As a result of the bomb-aimers’ accuracy, civilian casualties are believed to have been at a minimum.
