Baby Wool and Blankets. The supply of baby wool and cotblankets was the subject of a reply by the Minister of Supply Mr Sullivan, to Mrs Polson (Opposition, Mid-Canter-bury) in the House of Representatives yesterday. ‘’During April and May tne first imports of baby wool from the United Kingdom for some eight months arrived and amounted to approximately half our present annual quota,” said Mr Sullivan. “Advice has just been received to the effect that most of the re-1 mainder of this year's quota has been shipped, and it would appear that our supplies of baby wool will become much easier, though of course not normal.” The cot-blanket position had materially improved during recent months with the change-over from military to civil production in the woollen mills, added the Minister, and it was expected that there would shortly be no difficulties in obtaining normal supplies. Meat Rationing. Reference to the possibility of all meat being rationed in the Dominion was made in the House of Representatives yesterday during discussion on Ministerial replies to questions. Mr Polson (Opposition, Stratford) said he agreed with the statement of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Barclay, that there was an increasing demand for beef for armed forces consumption. It was desirable, however, that the export to Britain should be fully maintained. Mr Fraser: Does the honourable member foresee as I do that there may be a necessity to ration all meat? Mr Polson said if that were necessary then the people of the Dominion must tighten their belts and do their utmost to maintain supplies for overseas. Speaking later, the Minister of Agriculture said that pig meats had been rationed and it was probable that all other meats would have to be similarly rationed. Hosiery Rationing Scheme.
The continuation of the hosiery rationing scheme by means of a special card system after the expiry of the current rationing period at the end of this month is announced by the Rationing Controller, Mr J. E. Thomas. He stated that it was not proposed io use the coupons in the old ration book any longer for hosiery. As from August 1, said Mr Thomas, the system would remain the same as before except that special cards' would be used in place of the X coupon sheet in the old ration book. These cards would be on issue from rationing offices from August 2 onward and could be secured on application by all women who had attained the age of 16 years. Application could be made at any time during the next three months. Applicants would be required to produce their social security book, current ration book and the X sheet torn from the old ration book, and in exchange would receive a card containing eight hosiery coupons to provide for purchases of rationed hosiery in the future.
