DOOMED OREL

STEADY SOVIET PROGRESS CONTINUES ADVANCES OF THREE TO FIVE MILES. COSSACK CAVALRY IN ACTION LONDON, July 29. A Moscow communique states that the Red Army drive towards Orel today gained three to five miles in some sectors. Over 40 more towns and villages were liberated. On the Leningrad front, intense patrol activity and strong artillery fire are reported.

Earlier news of the Orel fighting was that the Russians were within ten miles of the city on three of the four railways leading to it. The advance in the north has been slowed up by floods and to overcome the difficulties confronting infantry, Cossack cavalry have been sent -into action.
