A PEOPLE’S WAR
COMMUNITY COURAGE & LEADERSHIP.
“Community courage has saved us — common courage. And community leadership has been there when it’s been needed. The following conversation actually took place near one of our munition factories. The night shift were on their way to work when the siren went. Some of the men, with families left behind, hesitated. “I know which way I’d rather be going,” said one of the men. “You mean that?” said one of his workmates, and looking at the man hard, he said with deep meaning: “Where can we best serve our wives and families?” The point went home. All of them went down the street to the factory. Community courage. People’s leadership in a people’s war. And I thank God every day for my neighbour’s courage. If you were the bravest man in the world, what would it avail you if- your neighbours', didn’t stand firm?” —William Holt, talking to overseas listeners to the 8.8. C., on “Production Under Fire.”
