ITALY’S PROBLEMS

SPECULATION IN LONDON EARLY PEACE OVERTURES. THOUGHT NOT UNLIKELY. (By Telegraph—Press 'Association—Copyr'ght) (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) t LONDON, July 27. General Eisenhower has been given full powers to deal with the new Italian Government or any which might replace it, should propitious circumstances arise, declares the “Daily Mail’s” diplomatic correspondent. The Allied terms are complete and uncompromising, and General Eisenhower knows them in detail. He will act with regard to military necessity, and will act at all times in conjunction with Messrs Macmillan and Murphy, the British and American political representatives in North Africa. If Marshal Badoglio is anxious for immediate discussions, it is cleai’ from Mr Churchill’s speech that the British and American Governments are prepared to listen. The “Daily Telegraph” says diplomatic circles would not be surprised if the first official peace overtures from Italy were made within 48 hours, or at least in the next few days. Overtures are more likely to come through Switzerland than the Vatican. That overtures have not already been made is believed to be due to Badoglio’s efforts to prevent at all costs Italy becoming an Allied and German battleground. Badoglio is reported to have been constantly in conference with General Mackensen and a number of Nazi experts in attempts to solve the difficulties.

“The Times” diplomatic correspondent says some observers in London suggest that Badoglio is giving the Germans a chance to withdraw unscathed from Italy before he approaches the Allies. On the other hand. Reuter’s correspondent inside Europe reports that strong forces of Germans are pouring across the Brenner Pass into Italy, but this is not confirmed.
