CARTERTON COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. BROKEN BOTTLES ON FOOTPATHS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council. There were also present: Crs. E. McKenzie, H. Mortenson, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, H. E. Jackson and W. R. Harry. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Wolters. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance in the district fund account of £2lO, with a Post Office Savings Bank deposit of £1225. The credit balance in the gasworks account is £340.
W. R. Pinfold was granted a rebate on his heavy traffic licence. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., wrote enclosing a reply which he had received from the Minister of Railways in regard to repairing the railway yards roadway leading from Belvedere Street to Broadway. The Minister said that he could not agree to the application. He suggested that the Council should acquire land for the purpose of forming a thoroughfare from Wheatstone Street to Belvedere Street. After discussion it was resolved to again approach the Minister through the member for the district, asking if the same could be regraded to do away with the drainage to Wheatstone Street. It was also decided to ascertain if the Department were prepared to dedicate a section from Belvedere Street to Broadway to make a connecting roadway. It was also stated by the Minister that further investigation had been made in regard to the railway yard, and that metal chips when available, would be placed there. The Carterton District High School asked that a select number of pupils of Form 11. be permitted to attend a meeting of the Council. It was decided not to grant the request, as facilities were not suitable for such a purpose.
The Mayor’s action in ordering an electrically controlled motor, to be installed at the headquarters of the chlorination plant,-was endorsed. An application from Mrs L. Peters for a new water service to premises occupied by Mr G. Tildesley, was granted. It was resolved that legal action be taken to recover expenses incurred in the re-erection of chimneys damaged in the earthquake last year. The Carterton District High School Committee wrote complaining of the state of the footpath at the entrance to the school grounds, which was littered with broken bottles, which might cause serious injury to children who attended the school barefooted. It was resolved that the borough foreman inspect the entrance to the school grounds after dances held in the State Theatre, and if any broken bottles were seen to sweep them away before the children arrived at school. It was also decided that the matter be reported to the military, and that the police be asked to take action.
The Mayor reported in connection with an interview which the Works Committee and fire brigadesmen had with Mr Morten, of Wellington, concerning the proposed new fire station. The plans were taken to Wellington, he said, and a report will be submitted to the Council later. The proposed plans
also provide for living quarters for a married caretaker. The clerk was authorised to advertise that all unregistered dogs found in the borough would be destroyed when caught.
