MADE BY ALLIES IN SICILY
Except on Catanian Plain AMERICANS FIFTY MILES EAST OF PALERMO 21 AXIS TRANSPORT PLANES SHOT. DOWN LONDON, -July 27. The Allied, forces in Sicily are in touch with the enemy all along the front, for a distance of 60 to 70 miles to the north coast of the island. From the Catania sector there is little news today. The Germans are blowing up dumps in a big airfield near the town. This, it is stated, does not mean that the enemy intends to evacuate their stores from the airfield, which is no longer usable. . . . On the central front the enemy launched attacks against the Canadian and American forces but these have not got them anywhere and have cost the enemy very heavy losses. At the northern end of the line the Americans are still closing in along the coast and have passed a point 50 miles east of Palermo. . . The enemy is still using one or two landing grounds m Sicily and is bringing in men and supplies in big Junkers transport planes. Yesterday Spitfires shot down 21 of these planes, along with eight of their escorting fighters. Only one Spitfire was lost. Key points in the enemy’s Sicily bridgehead were bombed again yesterday by Malta-based aircraft.
