CARTERTON
A WARM WELCOME RETURNED SERVICE MEN. (“Times-Age” Special.) The State Theatre, Carterton, was packed last night when an official welcome was extended to returned service men from the Middle East. The guests were: Warrant Officer P. A. Horden, Corporal J. Johnston, Sapper O. Reid, Privates W. Crawley, W. Allen, I. Blake, J. Spora, I. McCann, J. Paaske, and Corporal Gustofsen, A number of apologies for absence were received from returned men who were unable to be present. The Mayor welcomed the men back to Carterton. Fie knew they were only on furlough but the people of Carterton had made a promise when they left for overseas that they would be warmly welcomed on their return and it was for this purpose that they had assembled that night. He hoped that their stay, although brief, would be enjoyable. Other speakers were Messrs B. Roberts, M.P. for Wairarapa, A. E. Reid, chairman of the County Council, and C. A. Chennells, R.S.A. A presentation was made by the Mayor to Sergeant Sullivan, of the N.Z.R.A.F., who is on leave. Mrs H. Hodder, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, asked Sergeant Sullivan to accept a parcel of woollen comforts. Sergeant Sullivan suitably returned thanks. Music for the dancing was provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra. Extras wore played by Misses E. Lorenzen, Mavis Wilson and.Mr A. Morris. Mr P. L. Beere was an efficient M.C. Novelty dances were won by Miss L. Grant and partner and Misg Bond and partner.
A buffet supper was provided by the ladies’ committee.
The hon. .secretary, Miss H. Hamer, and the Carterton entertainment committee were warmly congratulated on the complete arrangements made for the gathering.
ORDER OF DRUIDS
TOTARA LODGE. Arch Druid Bro. H. J. Bassett presided over the meeting of Totara Lodge, No. 3, U.A.O.D. Reference to the deaths of Bros. W. Rossiter and Albert Swinn was made by the Arch Druid and several members, after which a vote of condolence with the relatives was carried in silence. Bro. Alfred Hawke, a prisoner of war in Italy, wrote stating that the parcel I'forwarded to him by the Lodge had • been received in excellent order, and for which he was very thankful. | j The Friendly Societies’ Hospital As- ■ scciation notified that the annual meetiing would be held at Masterton on I August 10. It was resolved to elect two delegates at the next meeting. ; The invitation of Stonehenge Lodge ; to attend the reception to Bro. Cpl. A. ; H. Mudgway, of the Middle East Forces, i who is on furlough, to be held on Augi ust 2, was accepted, and eight members signified their intention of attending. The Arch Druid and several members welcomed Bro. Oliver Reid, of the Railway Unit in the Middle East Forces, I who has returned home. Bro. Reid ; thanked the Lodge for the welcome exi tended. > •

Sick pay and accounts amounting to £8 18s were passed for payment. Early Lambs. Miss B. Arcus,, of South Carterton, I has two early lambs on her property. ■ They are three weeks old. Traffic Control Corps. ’ Tomorrow evening the 28th Company j of the Traffic Control Corps will hold a dance at the State Theatre. Mrs Ashton's orchestra will provide the dance music. Personal Items. Mrs H. T. Leete yesterday received news of the death of her father, which occurred at Invercargill. Mrs Leete and her daughter left last evening for Invercargill. Mr C. Free, of the Paekakariki railway staff, has been transferred to Carterton.
