JOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP. By riding Royal Brief to success in a division of the hack sprint at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday, Wilson Ellis raised his total of winning rides for the season to 43, and becomes the champion jockey of the Dominion. This is one less than Broughton won the title with last season. Broughton's score this season was 41. Ellis, who will be 21 next month, has been riding for six seasons. In the first two he was unable to get on the list of those riding "IO or more winners, but in the third year of his apprenticeship he scored 21, Mudford being the leading apprentice with 44. The following year Ellis rode 25 winners, S. Waddell being the leading apprentice with 37. In his first season as a fully-fledged jockey Ellis's score was 22. and this season is his best with 43. His uncles. L. J. and A. E.. also figured as champions in the past, L. J. four times and A. E. once.
