RIGID CONTROL
IMPOSED BY BADOGLIO ASSEMBLIES PROHIBITED. THREAT TO USE ARMED FORCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 26. “This is not the moment to indulge in demonstrations, because they will not be tolerated. The demands of the present grave hour are soberness, discipline and patriotism from everyone. Each one of you is asked to do everything for the supreme interests of the nation. Assemblies are prohibited and public authorities have orders to disperse all gatherings. The control of public order has now come under the military authorities.” —This, according to the Rome radio, is the text of a proclamation by Marshal Badoglio, who added: “Following on the appeal from the King-Emperor to the Italian people, and after my proclamation, each one of you must again take your place at your benches and with your duties. Force will be used wherever necessary to bring anyone who disobeys the law to their senses. The curfew will be imposed from dusk to dawn. No civilian must be out during this period, except priests, doctors and midwives. The sale of arms and ammunition is forbidden. Cars, motor-boats and planes of all types must not be used, except in the service of the public and the military authorities. All signalling is forbidden and all permits to carry arms of any kind are cancelled until further notice. Troops will, if necessary, use firearms to enforce orders. All offenders will be arrested and handed to military tribunals for judgment.”
