IMPOSED ON ITALY BY MARSHAL BADOGLIO
Little Known Men Appointed to New Cabinet FASCIST MILITIA BROUGHT UNDER MILITARY COMMAND MR CHURCHILL TO MAKE EARLY STATEMENT LONDON, July 26. The Rome radio has announced the names of the new Italian Cabinet. Little is known of most of the Ministers. Many are Government officials. An admiral is in charge of the Navy and four Italian generals have taken office under Badoglio, who has put the country under martial law and has brought the Fascist militia under command of the Italian Army. The military has been authorised to open fire if necessary to keep order. Nothing is known of Mussolini’s whereabouts. Mr Churchill will make a statement about Italy at the next sitting of Parliament. The War Cabinet had long meetings today and has been in constant touch with Washington. In Washington, no statement has yet been made by President Roosevelt. The United States Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, at a Press conference today, said there was no change in the unconditional surrender policy of the United Nations. Germany seems to be in two minds about the situation. The Foreign Office news service said that the developments in Italy were obviously due to the domestic situation and there was no evidence that Mussolini’s resignation was connected with the recent meeting with Hitler. The German overseas radio said the news was a shock to Germany, but calm was restored when the German people were told that Mussolini was ill.
