CARTERTON

MAORI WAR EFFORT SUCCESSFUL DANCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The dance in connection with the Maori War Effort in the State Theatre, Carterton, on Saturday evening was a success in every respect. Mr T. Udy's Orchestra provided firstclass music and a number of much appreciated extras being played by members of the audience. Mr D. J. Irwin was an efficient M.C. Welcome to Service Men. Tonight the citizens’ committee will entertain Carterton district service men at a social gathering at the State Theatre. Dancing will commence at 8 o’clock, and the music will be provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra. At an interval in the proceedings the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, will extend a welcome to the men. The secretary Miss H. Hamer, and a strong committee have all the arrangements complete for the gathering and those present should spent an enjoyable time. A special feature will be the supper. Borough Council Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will be held tomorrow night. Card Tournament. The card tourney held by the Labour Party on Saturday evening was well attended. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Challis, 1: Mrs J. Hooper, 2. Men: Mr G. Challis, 1; Mr G. Goodin, 2. Personal Items. Messrs R. Smith and B. Catt, who had spent a holiday in Auckland, returned home on Saturday. Mrs R. Smith, who had been visiting Hawera, returned to Carterton on Saturday. Leading Aircraftman George Sewell was met this morning at the Council Chambers, Carterton, by the Mayor and a number of citizens and made a presentation by the Mayor. Mrs H. Hodder, on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, handed to the guest of honour a parcel of woollen comforts. Leading Aircraftman Sewell suitably acknowledged the gifts. Mrs F. Shutkowski, of South Carterton, who has been an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, has returned to her home.

On Saturday night the staff of the Regent Theatre and their friends were entertained at a preview of that excellent picture, “’Danny Boy, - ’ which, at the conclusion of the screening, was considered to be splendid entertainment. Those present were later guests of the management at a supper held in the lounge. REGENT THEATRE “INTERNATIONAL LADY.” ' The exciting drama, "International Lady” will be finally shown tonight. The chief roles arc taken by Ilona Massey, George Brent and Basil Rathbone.
