DURATION OF THE WAR
SPECULATION IN WASHINGTON. POSSIBLE PROS AND CONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) NEW YORK, July 23. “Germany will be out of the war next year and Japan the year after” —the “Wall Street Journal's” Washington correspondent says this is the opinion of United States officials. The correspondent points out that the most optimistic sign is that the Office cl’ Price Administration has not planned ration books beyond Number 4. issuable in November. The most pessimistic signs are that the War Production Board has scheduled production through the next 18 months and that the Office of Foreign Food Relief does not count on feeding Europe before the winter of 1944-45. On the other hand, military sources believe that Germany must quit when supplies of one critical item are exhausted. They do not specify which, but it might be gasoline. Far East experts believe that guerilla fighting will continue in occupied areas after Japan falls.
