STRIKE PENALTIES
ENFORCEMENT IN AUSTRALIA IN COAL MINING INDUSTRY. FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER'S INSTRUCTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. Instructions to speed up prosecutions against striking coal miners and to ensure that penalties are enforced have been issued by the Prime Minister. Mr Curtin’s instructions provide for the immediate prosecution of persons responsible for coal stoppages and the enforcement of gaol term penalties for those who default on the payment of fines. The Crown Solicitors, who are satisfied that there is a prima facie case of coal mine stoppages being in contravention of the law, will immediately begin proceedings under the National Security Act against the employers or employees responsible. The Government will not interfee with the automatic process of prosecution and penalties imposed will be fully enforced. Mr Curtin said he would regard every coal miner who stopped work,’ not only as a breaker of the law, but as a factor giving aid to the enemies of his country. Until the issue of Mr Curtin's newest regulations, enforcement of the existing laws against strikes has not been automatic, but dependent upon Government authorisation.
