DEVELOPING WELL

SITUATION AROUND OREL GERMANS PLAYING DANGEROUS ' GAME. LARGE FORCE BEING HEMMED IN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 25. The situation around Orel is developing quickly towards, a regular investment of the city. The German Command, says Reuter’s Moscow correspondent, is playing a dangerous game. No considerable number of German troops has been withdrawn from the Orel cul de sac. They are being hemmed in from three sides. The thrust from the south is progressing particularly well. It is crashing through extremely powerful defensive positions which had been built up for nearly two years. The Russians are beyond Zmiekka, only 20 miles from Orel, and are advancing directly against the city along the Kursk-Orel Railway. The latest dispatches from this sector say the Germans everywhere are retreating. The same is true of the area south of Bolkhov. Many Germans are surrendering. This rarely occurred last year. STEADY PROGRESS REPORTED BY RUSSIANS. MORE DETAILS OF ENEMY LOSSES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) RUGBY, July 25. The Russian advance towards Orel continues,, according to tonight's communique, which states: “Today Soviet troops in the Orel direction, overcoming enemy, resistance and counter-at-tacks, continued their offensive and advanced from 2g to six miles, occupying 30 localities.” The communique gives the names of several localities and adds: “In the Byelgorod direction, reconnaissance activity took place, and on some sectors of this front there was fighting of local importance. In the Donetz Basin, south of Izyum and south-west of Voroshilovgrad, there vzas intensified reconnaissance activity. “Yesterday, on all sectors of the front, Soviet troops destroyed or disabled 64 enemy tanks. In aerial engagements and by anti-aircraft fire, 56 German planes were shot down.”

OREL BATTLE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR GERMANS. ACCORDING TO MILITARY EXPERT. (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, July 25. The well-known military expert, Max Werner, writing in ‘'Reynold’s News" says: “The battle for Orel is more than a battle for, another city. It is a great test of the forces which will determine the whole course of the campaign and it vzill give clear proof of the real relationship of the forces on the Russian front and the fighting capacities of both armies. Orel is the last German stronghold on the central front and the junction of Germany’s Central and Southern armies, but the battle for Orel is only the beginning of a great series of battles in Russia. Since February the Red Army has done nothing but prepare for the summer and autumn offensives. During February, the Russians conserved their major forces, using only two of the five army groups which are concentrated on the southern front . It is almost certain that three other groups, numbering between 40 and 60 divisions, were withheld for the new operations. One day this summer or autumn these immense forces will strike, and never again will the German Army achieve even temporary local superiority over the Rus-; sians, either numerically or in quality.”

CHANGED TUNE OF GERMAN COMMENTATORS. HOPES THAT RUSSIA WILL EXHAUST HERSELF. (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, July 25. Strong Russian forces now stand along the Orel salient, 30 miles northward, 10 miles north-east-wards, 7 miles eastwards, 18 miles south-eastward, and 20 miles southwards of the city. Advanced mobile units are striking against the German flanks, and are considerably nearer at some points. “The battle on the Eastern front is still increasing in intensity,” declared the Berlin radio. “Practically the whole front is now involved. The Russian High Command obviously has decided to make a gigantic effort and to strike out this summer.” The radio reported that the Russians had succeeded in breaching the German lines east of the Neva. “The Russians,” it said, “attacked all day south of Lake Ladoga, where breaches made in the German lines were sealed off.”

Today's Finnish communique states that the Russians, supported by intense artillery and mortar fire, yesterday attacked the White Sea Canal at three points, in battalion strength, “and by stubborn and continuous thrusts succeeded in penetrating our trenches, but later were thrown back.” The “Daily Express” Stockholm correspondent says the Germans, for the first time, admit that it is impossible to beat Russia on the battlefield, also that Germany henceforth will be forced on to the defensive. These statements appear in the “Essener National Zeitung,” which, after analysing the situation on the Russian front, concludes that events have taken a turn which “excludes for both sides the possibility of a decisive offensive action unless one side meets insuperable supply difficulties. All Germany now has to do is to retain her conquests and wait until Russia’s resources of men and material are exhausted.”
