JAPANESE SEAPLANE TENDER ENEMY DESTROYER DAMAGED DAMAGING BLOWS STRUCK BY ALLIED AIRCRAFT. SOME TOKIO RADIO CLAIMS. (By Telegraph-Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 25. Allied bombers in the South-West. Pacific sank a 9000-ton seaplane tender of the Nisshi class and damaged a destroyer off Bougainville Island at dusk on Thursday. The tender was oscorted by four destroyers and was trying to carry supplies and equipment to Buin. Allied torpedo-bombers and dive-bombers attacked the tender at dusk, while fighters engaged Zero fighters. Five Japanese aircraft were destroyed for the loss of three Allied fighters. This success is reported in General MacArthur's communique on weekend operations in the Solomons. It gives the following additional details:— “Santa Ysabel: Our, medium divebombers with fighter cover executed a surprise attack on enemy installations at Rekata Bay, starting fires. “Vella Gulf: Our light surface units intercepted four enemy barges attempting to run supplies into Kolombangara, setting two on fire. “New Georgia: In direct support of the ground troops, our torpedo and dive-bombers, escorted by fighters, dropped 80 tons of high explosives in two heavy attacks on enemy positions at Bairoko and Eibilo Hill, one mile north-cast of Munda. One of our aircraft ws lost. The crew, is believed to have been rescued. Two enemy planes ineffectively raided Enogai Inlet.” The Nisshi class of seaplane tenders are 570 feet long and carry about 14 aircraft. These seaplanes are serviced and repaired by the tender, being launched over the side and recovered by cranes. The Tokio radio admits the loss of a destroyer and claims that Japanese bombers sank a lai'ge Allied destroyer in Rendova harbour in the Central Solomons. Rendova is the American base for the offensive against Munda, the important enemy airfield on New Georgia. The Tokio radio says that 90 Allied planes attacked the Japanese destroyers, which were reinforcing the Solomons bases under air cover.
