Mesdames Burrell and D. McGavin, of Wellington, were visitors to Masterton last week. Mrs J. M. Tosswill, of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs I. E. Dodds, Pownall Street, Masterton. Lieutenant H. M. A. Major, who was accidentally wounded in the New Hebrides, is at present on sick leave in Masterton. It is announced from Government House that her Excellency, Lady Newall. has arrived in England with her son. Mr R. O. Montgomerie, Kakatahi. near Wanganui, has been selected to contest the Waimarino electorate in the interests of the National Party. Miss E. Caldwell (W.W.S.A. Transport), Masterton, who recently completed a course of A.R.P. lectures has passed her elementary examination. Major C. F. Skinner, M.C.. M.P., returned to Wellington on Saturday from overseas to take up his new appointment as Minister of Rehabilitation. Later he was sworn in by the GovernorGeneral as a member of the Executive Council.
The death occurred suddenly of Mr James Jenkins, who was well known in Wellington business circles. He died at the annual meeting of the Island Bay Bowling Club, a few minutes after he had retired from the position of president. Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., is to marry Mrs F. M. Law, Rotorua, for many years matron of the hospital at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. Mr Dickie entered Parliament in 1925, defeating Mr J. R. Corrigan for the Patea seat, which he has held ever since. News has been received in Wellington of the death in Melbourne, of Mr William Reginald Hume, managing director of the Hume Pipe Company (Australia), Ltd., and associate companies. Many years ago the Hume Pipe Company had a branch in Masterton. Private Gordon Duff, a member of the Mahunga Golf Club, who is on furlough from the Middle East, was welcomed back at a gathering of club members. The club captain, Mr I. I. McGregor, on behalf of those present, extended to him the best wishes of members for an enjoyable period of leave and the best of luck in the future. The death has occurred at Palmerston North of Mrs Enid A. Collins, J.P., widow of the late Mr J. G. Collins, J.P. She was the first woman justice of the peace of the city. Mrs Collins was born in 1870. Mr and Mrs Collins farmed in the Taihape district for more than 30 years. Mr Collins was widely known as a breeder of stud sheep and owned and bred a number of outstanding racehorses. Mr and Mrs Collins retired to Palmerston North in 1920.
