♦ Mr and Mrs T. H. Verry, Coonoor, are spending the weekend in Masterton. Mrs Ashdown, Cole Street, Masterton, has returned from a short visit to Wellington. Mrs Evans, Martinborough, is the guest of the Misses Kummer, Cole Street, Masterton. Mrs Middlebrook, Ormondville, is staying with her mother, Mrs H. Dillon, Church Street, Masterton. Mr Duncan Mackay, inspector of schools in Taranaki, was yesterday appointed principal of the Christchurch Training College in succession to the late Mr J. G. Polson.
Mrs S, Claridge, wife of the late Mr Vincent' Claridge, who was the first secretary of the Wellington Working Men’s Club, has just attained her ninety-first birthday. Mrs Claridge left Northamptonshire, England, in 1872 for New Zealand. Mrs Claridge can claim to be one of the oldest residents of Kilbirnie, settling there in 1881. The following naval personnel, previously reported missing presumed killed, were yesterday notified as being reclassified as reported killed: Arthur Barlow, Commissioned Electrician, R.N.Z.N.; Ronald G. Marshall, Chief Petty Officer; Norman G. Warren, Acting Stoker Petty Officer; Gordon A. Cameron, Leading Seaman. Two high-ranking United States naval officers arrived in Auckland yesterday on an official visit to New Zealand. They are Rear-Admiral Calvin H. Cobb, who commands the service squadrons of the South Pacific force, and Rear-Admiral Carl H. Cotter, who is director of the Pacific division of the bureau of yards and docks. Rear-Admiral Cobb has visited New Zealand twice before, and Rear-Admiral Cotter is making his second visit. Mr and Mrs S. Mannering, Renall Street, Masterton, who will leave Masterton next week to take up their residence in Napier, have been the guests of honour at a number of farewell parties recently. Mr and Mrs H. H. Daniell, Lansdowne, gave a “sherry party” in their honour and Mr and Mrs G. O'Hara Smith held a similar party. The Catholic Services Club met at the residence of Mrs C. N. Stilburn, South Road, to farewell Mrs Mannering. Reference was made to Mrs Mannering’s work in the club and the best wishes of the members extended to her. The ladies' committee of the Masterton Golf Club entertained Mrs Mannering on Wednesday. After a friendly match, afternoon tea was served at the residence of Mrs J. C. Forsyth, Bannister Street. Yesterday afternoon Mrs J. A. E. Kerslake, Casel Street, gave a farewell party in Mrs Mannering’s honour.
