WINTER RACING

SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING. PRELUDE TO GRAND NATIONAL CARNIVAL. With the winter racing season closed in the North Island interest will centre tomorrow on the South Canterbury meeting as a prelude to the Grand National Carnival. The following horses may be favoured:— Hadlow Hurdles: Nightcalm, Forte, Midguard. Levels Handicap: Pallid, Last Effort, Royal Brief. Teschemaker Steeplechase: Valens. Master Dingle, Night Scout. South Canterbury Steeples: Anglo-French, Erination, Gay Boa. Hunters 1 Plate: Knight Commander, Bow Street, Invincible. Claremont Handicap: Platform, Fairy Bard, Sing Sing. Pentlow Handicap: Tring, Hunting Charm, Little Secret. RACING CAREER FINISHED. Cheerful Lady, the well known Defoe mare, has finished racing and is going to the stud, according to the owner, Mr A. V. Faulknor, of Masterton.
