BOY SCOUTS WEEKLY CARD TOURNAMENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the weekly card tournament conducted by the Citizens’ Committee of the Boy Scout movement, the prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Holland 1. Mrs Jackson 2. Men: Mr Edwards 1, Mr Morris 2. Personal Items. The engagement is announced of Jean Ellen, third daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Conwell, of Brooklyn Road, Carterton, and Sapper Gordon Hamilton, 2nd N.Z.E.F., fourth son of Mr and Mrs J. Hamilton, Paeroa. Mr C. Eddy, of Hukanui, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. Macri War Effort. An enjoyable time is guaranteed to patrons who attend the dance to be held in the State Theatre. Holloway Street, Carterton, on Saturday night, the proceeds from which will go towards the Maori war effort. Udy's orchestra will provide the music. Welcome to Service Men. .The Citizens’ Entertainment Committee is making every effort to give the district members of the 2nd N.Z.E.F., who have returned on furlough from overseas, a warm welcome at a dance to be held in the State Theatre on Monday night. Miss Waterston’s Lecture. To an appreciative audience in the Masonic Hall last evening, Miss H. Waterston, late of London, continued her illustrated lantern lectures. The subject was “The Book of Genesis as Revealed by Archaeology.” Many outstanding examples of the truth of the Bible, as revealed by ancient writings, were unfolded by the lecturer. The interest and enthusiasm of the audience was sustained by a series of over fifty beautiful and original lantern slides. A remarkable fact, said the lecturer, was that every discovery by archaeology had proved the Bible to be true in connection with the book of Genesis. Next Thursday Miss Waterston will lecture on “The Jews’ Return to Palestine.” All who are interested in world events will find these lectures of an instructive and helpful character, and are invited to attend at 7.15 o’clock next:
Thursday night in the Masonic Hall. Patriotic Dance. Despite the inclement weather there was a good attendance at the patriotic dance held last night. Music was provided by Miss Mary Herrick, and an extra played by Miss Irene Thomas was much appreciated. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. Lorenzen and Mr McGinsky. the prizes for which were donated by Mrs A. E. Reid. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district, and a most enjoyable gathering was brought to a close after midnight.
REGENT THEATRE TWO BIG ATTRACTIONS. At the Regent Theatre tonight there will be finally shown “Riders of the Timberland" (starring William Boyd and Andy Clyde), an excellent story of the West, and “Riot Squad,” an exciting drama, featuring Rita Quigley and Richard Cromwell.
