HITLER’S ORDER
OREL TO BE HELD REGARDLESS OF COST LINE OF RETREAT CLOSING. VAIN AXIS COUNTER-ATTACKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 22. Beyond Orel, the Germans’ escape gap for the troops has narrowed to some 30 miles, but the enemy is apparently determined to fight it odt, and is bringing up reinforcements and launching one counter-attack after another, so far without any success. Russian long-range guns are already shelling the city gf Orel, says the Moscow correspondent of the British United Press. Hitler is reported to have ordered that Orel must be held regardless of cost, so the Germans arc rushing up fresh divisions. The German forces in the pocket which the Russians are trying to cut off include, numerous armoured units. German sources describe the battle between Orel and Sukhinichi as a great blood mill, with the Russians ever reattacking in greater strength. VILE VANDALISM HOME OF TURGENEV DESTROYED BY NAZIS. LONDON, July 21. One of the points which the Red Army has recaptured on the Orel# sector is the estate of Turgenev, the famous Russian author of the last century. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Moscow correspondent says that the house has disappeared except for the brick foundations and two stoves. The Nazis had converted his chapel into a stable, and riddled the ikons with bullets. The writer’s bust was found in a shrubbery. Turgenev’s estate was a national shrine, like Tolstoy’s and Pushkin's, both of which the Germans have also destroyed.
