Mrs G. Hume, who had been visiting Wellington, has returned to Masterton. Mr W. Iggulden has found it neces- , sary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Eeetham, “Kouratahi,” Masterton. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Wilson, Wellington, spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs G. D. Wilson, Essex Street, Masterton. Pleasure was expressed by members of the Masterton Borough Council last night that Councillor G. D. Wilson is making good progress towards recovery from illness. The death occurred a few days ago of Sir Patrick Duncan, Governor-Gen-eral of South Africa, an appointment

he had held since 1937. He was a bar rister of the Inner Temple and Advo cate of the Supreme Court of Soutl Africa and was Minister of the Inter ior, Public Health and Education 1921 2-1, and Minister of Mines 1933-36. Mr. Lett thanked the hostesses and his friends for their kindness. The funeral of the late Mr Albert George Swinn took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of mourners. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducted the burial service. Wreaths were sent by Messrs J. A. Betts Ltd., the manager and staff of Yates Cash Stores Ltd., the Kuripuni Methodist Ladies’ Guild, the officers and members of the Stonehenge Lodge of Druids and others. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Pawson, F. Pickering, F. Grey and W. Burkitt. Though he was at his office in Parliament Buildings yesterday, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, did net take his seat in the House of Representatives, a Wellington message states. Following treatment for glandular trouble, Mr Holland has been advised to refrain from public speaking for a short time, and unless a major debate arises he will not take an active part as Leader of the Opposition in the House for the next week or so. His health has improved greatly as a result of medical treatment and a brief holiday in North Canterbury.

Mr William Si.mm, formerly manager of the D.1.C., Wellington, died at Karori on Monday night, in his 74th year. He had been associated with the drapery trade in Wellington since the days of his youth, having first entered the business as a boy in 1883 with the late Mr James Smith, then of Te Aro House, Cuba Street (the founder of James Smith, Ltd), only a year after he landed in Wellington from Scotland. He was appointed manager for Blythe’s, Ltd., in Napier, remaining there till he was appointed Wellington manager for the D.I.C. in succession to Mr A. A. Corrigan. He occupied that position for 28 years and retired in 1939.
