PIRINOA

EUCHRE PARTY & DANCE WELCOME TO MAORI SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Memorial Hall was packed on Friday evening .when the Pirinoa Tribal Committee held a euchre party and dance. The occasion was also used io welcome home two members of the Maori Battalion—Sergeant P. Edwards and Private Meiha Rewi. Among those present were six Martinborough service men who had returned on furlough. When the service men entered the hall they were received in traditional Maori welcome, the whole assembly rising and cheering them. The local Home Guard under the command of Mr E. C. Holmes, attended in uniform. There was a large number of Maoris from Greytown, Martinborough and Kahytara present. The men were welcomed by Messrs E. C. Holmes and F. Lovegrove. Messrs Watson, chairman of the local Tribal Committee, and Carter, spoke in Maori, the latter also addressing the assembly in English. Several hakas and action songs were given by the Greytown party which were repeatedly encored. Mrs Geo. Turei, who is the possessor of a cultured soprano voice, was repeatedly encored for her rendering of popular items. Local talents also supplied items. The dance music was supplied by Te Maari’s Band, extras being played by the Misses Prussing and Te Whaiti. The M's.C. were Messrs Halidone and Herangi. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss R. Matenga and Mr A. Feast (adults) and Miss Ida Snow and Master Walker (juniors). The competitions were won by the Misses Elva Enoka (dinner) and R. Kani (mystery). _ ! The produce stall was cleared of its; contents early in the evening. The ( supper arrangements, which were in J the hands of the ladies’ committee, were excellent. The net proceeds were equally dividwed between the Women's Institute and the Patriotic Committee for providing parcels for service men. A.t a meeting of the Pirinoa Tribal Committee held at the weekend the balance sheet in connection with the | euchre party and dance was submitted bv the secretary (Mr Carter). The chairman congratulated the committee on its splendid effort, and also referred to the assistance given by the rcsi-! dents of the district, which in a large | measure helped to make the gathering > the success it was.
