Bequest to Homes. Dr. Barnado’s Homes will benefit to the extent of approximately £5OOO. from the estate of the late Mr N. Callister, of Te Puke Cabbage Growing at College. As a war effort some twenty thousand cabbages will be grown at the Wairarapa College this season. At last night’s meeting of the College Board, the Internal Marketing Division advised that it would contract for the matured cabbages at a price to be advised later. Ration Allowance. A ration allowance of lOd a day is to be made by the Army to Home Guardsmen doing any form of voluntary training in the future. Before the Home Guard was placed on a re-" serve basis and its training reduced, the men were provided with rations if they attended a full-day parade. Timber Milling Industry. The shortage of manpower in the timber milling industry is being keenly felt throughout the building trade. Plans are under way to ensure the equitable distribution of available milled timber to all merchants, irrespective of their former sources of supply, by the formation of a pool under the Timber Controller, it is stated. Minesweeper Launched Today. Another minesweeper for the New Zealand naval forces, the Tawhai, was launched at Auckland today. The christening ceremony was carried out by Mrs E. T. Tirikatene, wife of the member of the Executive Council representing the Native race. The vessel is of the composite wood and metal type like those which have preceded it.

Stocks of Corrugated Iron. “I have been told on good authority that there is 80,000 tons of corrugated iron in Wellington, and it is held by one firm, but it cannot be released,” said a member of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. The chairman, Mr R. Harding, said that the Government was going in for a big building scheme and no doubt wanted this iron for its own use. E.P.S. Organisation. A decision to support a resolution of the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies’ Association requesting the Minister of Civil Defence to terminate the present E.P.S. organisation as from September 30 and to direct its decentralisation and establishment on a voluntary civilian basis, was reached by the Waitemata County Council. It was stated that in the event of an emergency all equipment would be available. Invitation to Returned Soldiers. The Christchurch Union Jack Club has invited all recently-returned soldiers in other parts of New Zealand to be its guests for one week. The club has sleeping accommodation on its premises for 150 men, so that it will 'be necessary for returned soldiers to make application to the club before I coming to Christchurch. Every applicant will be notified of the date on 'which he can be accommodated, and | when he arrives he will be the guest of the club for one week.

Champion Puppy. Mr H. Stimpson, Masterton, exhibited his young pointer dog, Stamford Stalwart, at the Christchurch Show and won the highest award at the show, the grand puppy stakes which was for puppies of all breeds. Rate of Exchange. Asked in Wellington last night to comment on a rumour that the New Zealand rate of exchange was to be reduced irom 25 per cent to 15 per cent, the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, stated that there was absolutely no foundation for any report of that nature. The question of a reduction in the rate of exchange had not been considered by the Government. Mokatoa Scouts. Owing to the diphtheria outbreak the Mokatoa Scout Troop ceased activities for a period but resumed last Friday night. The Cub Pack will hold parades as from'next Thursday. The Scout parade was moderately well attended and the usual Scout work and games were carried out. Scout W. Knowles found it necessary to tender his resignation. The best wishes of the Troop were extended to him. Need of Changed Curriculum, “We have now received details of the new and extra matriculation courses The raising of the standard of this examination will considerably affect the school timetable and curriculum,” reported the Acting-Principal of Wairarapa College, Mr. F. J. Gair, at last Jiight’s meeting of the College Board. “It is a serious matter which will entail trial and error and far-reaching changes will have to be made in the school organisation,” added Mr Gair. It was decided to send the Principal, Lt.Colonel G. G. Hancox, information regarding the new regulations and ask for his comment.

Bookmaker Sent to Gaol. “The bench has a duty to administer the law irrespective of how bad, absurd or illogical we may thing it is,” said Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., when Lionel Arthur Baker, traveller,-' aged 43, admitted a charge of bookmaking at the Auckland S.M. Court yesterday. “Promiscuous betting with bookmakers being against the law is one of the most inimical things we have. It was the thin edge of the wedge and young people saw the law being flouted. A great surge of persons breaking the law had a bad effect on the adolescent view and they thought it was clever. Often when a man was charged with bookmaking it was said he was only an agent and that the master could not be apprehended. In this case the master was charged and it was impossible to grant leniency.” A sentence of two months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed.
