NEW ZEALAND OARSMAN
SUCCESSES IN EGYPT. HEGGLUN WINS SCULLING TITLE. (N.ZE.F Official News Service.) CAIRO, July 17. The Wellington sculler, T. Hegglun, who is also a prominent boxer and footballer, having played for the Ponexe club and the Wellington representatives, won the single sculls title at the Cairo championships, defeating the Egyptian champion, Mustapha el Said, for the second time. Hegglun and other New Zealanders rowed for the Cairo Club, whose training and racing facilities are available to the N.Z.E.F. The New Zealand pair, R. L. Young and J. Chester, were narrowly beaten for the pairs championship after leading for the greater part of the distance. Referring to the part taken by New Zealanders, the French newspaper, “La Bourse,” said: “There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the major part of the success of the regatta is owed to New Zealand oarsmen—those lusty sportsmen who came very close to taking the lion’s share of the championships.”
