Mr and Mrs Harold Marsh have left Pahiatua to take up their residence in Levin. The engagement is announced of Hilary, younger daughter of Mrs. A. Russell, Wellington, to Corporal Joseph Cartwright, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Cartwright, Penrose, Masterton. The death occurred on Sunday afternoon of Dr. Hughes Steele, Wellington, after a week’s illness as the result of a paralytic stroke. Dr. Steele, who was 56 years of age, was born and educated in England. Messrs W. R. Nicol (a member of the board) and F. J. Gair (acting-principal) have been appointed to represent the Wairarapa College Boajd of Governors at the Technical Association conference to be held at Christchurch on August 25. The following Masterton candidates were successful in the recent State final examination for pupil nurses: — Passes: M. V. Adams, J. C. Benge, A. M. Falloon, J. L. Roche-Kelly, E. Robb, W. M. Rollett. Partial pass: M. E. Turley. The death occurred at Featherston yesterday of Mr Victor Cobcroft, only son of Mr and the late Mr. L. T. Cobcroft, of Petone and formerly of Featherston, at the age of 38 years. The late Mr L. T. Cobcroft was formerly a well-known Australian, New Zealand, Wellington and Wairarapa representative cricketer. Private A. Friend, on furlough from the Middle East, was welcomed to the Mahunga Golf Club links by the captain, Mr I. I. McGregor, at a gathering of club members. Before he joined the forces, Private Friend was senior champion of the club. In acknowledging the good wishes extended to him, Private Friend related some experiences in playing golf in the Middle East.
A welcome home was extended to Sergeant Togo Coley, at the residence of Mr. W. McGovern, High Street, Masterton. The evening was arranged by Mr. and Mrs. J. Robinson. There was a good gathering of friends, and on behalf of those present, Mr. McGovern presented Sergeant Coley with a cheque. Musical items were enjoyed.
The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Mrs. Henrietta Mclntosh was the widow of Mr Kenneth Mclntosh, who died in 1921. She was born in Oamaru and resided in Masterton and Hamilton. She is survived by one son, Mr. R. Mclntosh (Hamilton) and one daughter, Mrs. A. H. Tinkham (Masterton). There will be a private interment at Masterton.
The funeral of the late Mrs J. Pickett took place in Masterton this morning. Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church and the service at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Father N. Moore. The pall-bearers were Messrs T. Pickett, S. Pickett, J. Marshall and W. Holes. Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from the officers and members of the Stonehenge Lodge, U.A.O.D. and Byford Bros.
The death occurred in Auckland last night of Sir Henry Horton, managing director of Wilson and Horton Limited, proprietors of the “New Zealand Herald” and “Weekly News,” states a Press Association message. He was 73 years of age. He married in 1897 Miss Jessie Buchanan Thomson, daughter of the late Mr James Thomson, Auckland. He is survived by Lady Horton and two sons, Mr Geoffrey Horton, Te Kauwhata, and Lieutenant Ronald D. Horton, director of Wilson and Horton, Limited, who is on active service overseas.
A very enjoyable time was spent on Saturday evening in the Orange Hall. Masterton, when a “parcel evening” was tendered to Mr and Mrs Ron Davies, in honour of their recent marriage. Dancing was indulged in to splendid music played by Miss Mary Herrick, of Parkvale. Mr J. Henderson was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Liddington. Mr R. Finlayson, on behalf of those present, asked Mrs Davies to accept and open the many gift parcels. Mr Davies suitably replied. The hostesses were Mesdames Dawson, Reeves, Schroder, Joyce, Couper, Nicholls, Misses Burrell, Height and Billington, and Messrs R. Finlayson and Nicholls.
It took a considerable time for the Wellington Anglican Synod to elect its standing committee, five ballots being needed. This was brought about by the fact that a nominee must secure a majority of votes from both orders before he can be elected. It was stated that on one occasion eleven ballots were necessary when a similar situation arose. The standing committee is now constituted as follows: —The Archdeacons of Wellington, Rangitikei, Waitotara, and Wairarapa, Canon D. J. Davies, the Rev. H. S. I. Kenney, the Rev. F. S. Ramson, Messrs W. E. Arnold, C. P. Brown, E. D. Cachemaille, C. T. Cox, H. E. Evans, H. A. Huggins, E. M. Stace and R. H. Webb and Dr. J. Nicol.
