COMBINED HUNT MEETING. STEEPLES TO COLONEL ROUGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, July 18. The Manawatu and Rangitikei Hunt Club were favoured with a sunny day for their annual combined race meeting, held on the Manawatu Racing Club's course at Awapuni on Saturday, and the large attendance gave the clubs the splendid turnover of £43,614 10s. The turnover last year, when the meeting was held at Marton, was £lB,123 and the previous year at Awapuni it was £34,869. Details of the racing:— Hack Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters: 9. The Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington resulted:— Victory March. 10.13 (Godfrey) 1; Highland March, 11.9 (Meenan), 2, Jack Farr. 9.12 (Regan), 3. Thirteen started, of which only seven finished. Five lengths: three and a half. lime. course record. Mag Mort broke a leg and was destroyed. By riding Young Jim to win the chan ß pion Hack Cup at the combined hunt at Awapuni on Saturday W. F. Ellis regained the lead by one point ovei W. J. Brough ton in the contest for the premiership Thirds on Phalaria and War Ciedit were the closest Broughton got on Saturday. Ellis will be riding at the South Canterbury Hunt next Saturday, . day’s racing of the current season. Biougn ton. who is in camp in the Ma "awatu district stated that it was most unlikely that he would be at South Canterbury. In such an event Ellis becomes the champion jockey ?or the season with 42 wins to Broughton s 4U Broughton has been the champion jockey for the past four seasons.
