CANADIAN TROOPS

“TERRIFIC ON THE BEACHES OF SICILY.” GENERAL MONTGOMERY'S TRIBUTE. LONDON, July 16. “The Canadians were terrific on the beaches of Sicily and also in attacks inland,” said General Montgomery, in an interview with a Canadian war correspondent, Ross Munro. “I am glad to have the Canadians here,” General Montgomery added. “I know they are sorry there is not much real fighting, because the Italians are running so fast, but they will get a bellyful before they have finished.” General Montgomery expressed satisfaction with the progress of t'hc operations. Asked for an estimate of the length of the campaign he said: “Maybe six months, maybe two weeks.”
