WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
UPPER PLAIN MEETING. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women's Institute was held at the residence of Mrs J. Gillespie. Mrs S. N. Kilgour, Welfare Officer of the Wairarapa branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society, gave a most interesting address, describing the work of the society throughout the Dominion. The members of the Institute expressed the opinion that very useful work was being carried out by the society and decided to become a member. Knitted comforts were handed in to be sent to the Country Women’s branch of the Red Cross Society. A letter was read thanking members for parcels of clothing that had been sent to several deserving cases. Gifts of tinned goods, writing material, etc., sufficient to pack two soldiers’ parcels, were received, and arrangements have been made for the packing of the same. The “bring and buy” stall was most successful, vegetables, marmalade and other goods being offered for sale. The competitions were won as follows:— Three leeks: Mrs Gillespie, 1: Mrs Mannell. 2. Plain scones: Mrs Laing. 1; Mrs Tankersley, 2; Mrs Skeet, 3. Next month there will be a competition for the best made-over garment. Members have been provided with used material for this purpose. The prize, which has been donated by one of the members, will be a year’s subscription to the “Home and Country.” Mrs C. H. Skeet will represent the Institute at the Gisborne conference of New Zealand Women’s Institutes.
