A Russian military spokesman declared that the Russians are gradually gelling the upper hand in the Byelgorod area. The Red Army is sending in. substantial tank reinforcements and is constantly attacking from heavilyfortified flank positions against the German wedges. These attacks are increasing in frequency and have reduced the pressure which the Germans are able to exert at the tips of the wedges. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent states that the Byelgorod battle raged fur-
iously today, and interlocked armies swaying to and fro and places changing hands frequently, Hitler is now estimated to have thrown 1,000,000 men, 2500 planes, and 4000 tanks into the battle of the Kursk salient, The Moscow correspondent of the. British United Press declares that the Russians have wrested the initiative from the Germans and appear to be on the way to forcing a decision along the whole 165 miles front between Orel and Byelgorod. Star” says that the Germans lost the battle of the Kursk bulge on the fifth day of the offensive, last Friday, when the Germans threw in tank and -infantry reserves on both the main sectors.
