HOME GUARD
“NOT A WASH-OUT” POSITION CLARIFIED. VOLUNTARY TRAINING PARADES. “The impression must not be gained abroad that the Home Guard is a wash-out,” commented Lieutenant-Colonel A. N. Oakey, M.C., Area Commander, Napier, referring to the recent statement by the Prime Minister announcing a restriction in training periods. “The period of compulsory training is merely restricted to six hours per quarter, but this does not preclude voluntary parades being called, -which, it is anticipated, will be well attended, especially as the enthusiasm of Home Guardsmen to parade has been so marked in this area,” he added. “The organisation remains, and each Home Guardsman retains his uniform and rifle, so that should the situation change, which is not anticipated, the whole organisation can again be brought into full-time activity at short notice.” Colonel Oakey added that it should be remembered that the enthusiasm shown by Home Guard units throughout New Zealand had brought them to a high standard of efficiency and the Guard would, as was the intention on its inception, be a very effective force should the occasion to defend these shores arise in the future.
