Planted 80 years ago yesterday to commemorate the marriage of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VI [, to Princess Alexandra of Denmark, in 1863, an oak tree on the north side of the Avon River, to the rear of the Public Hospital, is the oldest tree in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. It is in a healthy condition, stands 60 feet high, and has a'spread of 90 feet. Great celebrations were held in Christchurch at the time of the Royal marriage, and the planting of two oak trees, named “Albert Edward” and “Alexandra,” was a central feature of the occasion. The superintendent of the province presided at the planting of the trees, one of which is the tree at present standing.
Caledonian Society. A meeting of directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held during the week and final arrangements in connection with the third Ingleside which is to be held in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, on July 13, were made. Mr and Mrs J. J. Hunter were appointed to take charge of the gathering, which is for members and their friends. The meeting was advised that Mr Arcus (patron) had not been able to attend recent gatherings as he had not been in the best of health and the hope was expressed that he would be well enough to attend in the near future. Special thanks were passed to the ladies’ committee for the splendid suppers provided at' the Inglesides. Mesdames Bell, Young and Campbell were also accorded the thanks of the directors for their assistance. The president nominated eight new members and these were approved.
