Fighting at Its Fiercest in South NAZI WEDGE DRIVEN INTO RUSSIAN DEFENCES PRESSURE EXPECTED TO INCREASE LONDON, July !). iln Russia there has been more violent fighting on both flanks of the Kursk salient. Russian and German tanks are locked together in what is probably the greatest armoured battle of the war. The Russians are using their big tanks against the German sixty-ton Tigers, On the northern portion of the front, near Orel, the Germans say they have to fight against constant Russian attacks, but it is in the south that , the fighting is fiercest. Here the German panzers have driven a wedge into the Russian defences and a Moscow correspondent says much depends on the outcome of today’s fighting. Rusmilitary circles state that German pressure is expected to increase and that further fierce fighting is likely. The Germans are trying to break through the Russian defences with a series of heavy armoured drives, first in one sector and then in another.
