GENERAL FREYBERG
LIGHTNING TOUR ENDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 9. After a lightning toui’ of New Zealand, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., returned late this afternoon to Auckland. On the way from Rotorua he attended receptions at Cambridge, Hamilton, Ngaruawahia Pa and Huntly, and in addition he made several unscheduled stops on the road to greet and speak briefly to school children who had gathered to wave him enthusiastically on his way. He revived an old and popular custom and caused a number of schools, to be granted half and whole holidays. General Freyberg was accompanied to Auckland by the Prime Minister and the Minister in charge of Co-ordination of the Armed Forces, Mr Perry, M.L.C. Because of fog in the Mamaku hills and rather lengthier receptions than had been planned impeding his progress, General Freyberg was about half an hour late in arriving at Auckland. He went straight to a reception which had been arranged in the Town Hall by the Returned Services Association.
