When Daisy Caroline Williams, waitress, aged 29, pleaded guilty to failing to attend for treatment for venereal disease, Senior-Sergeant G. Paine told Mr Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, that the case was brought for the protection of accused herself and of the public. The magistrate said his first duty was to the public. She would be sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, and while she was in prison arrangements could be made for her proper treatment. Gramophones for Fighting Forces. The response to an appeal made through the Press of the Dominion for the donation of table gramophones for the use of servicemen in the Pacific, and also for members of small naval units, has been gratifying, but more are still required. Instruments may be handed to the Town Clerk of Masterton for transmission to the National Patriotic Fund Board. Thanks are extended for the gift of two very fine table gramophones complete with a good range of records, the donors being Mr and Mrs H. A. Templar, Queen Masterton, and Mrs McCracken, Villa Street, Masterton. Female Defaulters. The drive organised by the manpower authorities in Wellington, and subsequently taken up in other centres, as a means of locating and checking up on defaulters, principally female, under the Industrial Manpower Emergency Regulations, is being prosecuted vigorously and with results fully justifying the activities pursued to date, said a manpower official yesterday. Within the first fortnight of the campaign, 40 persons were interrogated. Within a month the tally had risen to 100, and to date upward of 300 persons have been so questioned. They are all persons covered by the regulations. Y.M.C.A. Ladies' Auxiliary.
The monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. was held yesterday, Mrs H. E. Pither, presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Bull, Keltie, Taylor, Blake, Marchbank, Blackwood, Diamond, Duckworth and Gaze. A welcome was extended to Mrs Grey, a new member. Various reports were received and adopted. At the meeting on August 12 the hostesses will be Mesdames Masters, Marchbanks, Nelson and Pike. A “bring and buy” stall was held. It was decided that the Ladies’ Auxiliary donate £lO to the Third Liberty Loan. W.W.S.A. Dance. A most successful dance was held in the Masonic Hall. Masterton, last night by Commander A. Whittaker and the Women’s War Service Auxiliary girls. The three services were well represented. As the dances run by the Auxiliary are so successful, it is proposed to hold others. The music was supplied by Mrs Ashton’s orchestra, and Ser-geant-Major J. Dixon was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by L.A.C. Christiansen and Sergeant Holes, and a lucky spot dance was won by Seaman R. Harrington and Miss J. Smith. Supper was served by Sergeant McCord and her canteen workers. Miss O. McMinn (secretary) was responsible for the dance arrangements.
