CARTERTON
PRODUCTION COUNCIL COMMITTEE ELECTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting of the Wairarapa Production Council, convened by Mr R. W. Kebbell, secretary-organiser, Mr W. Wilson was in the chair. Addressing the meeting, Mr Kebbell said that it was desired to elect representative committeees in the main centres of the Wairarapa to assist the central body, each committee to appoint one delegate. Mr R. H. Brewerton, vice-chairman and representative of the produce merchants on the Production Council, spoke on matters concerning farm production. Dealing with finances, he said that the departmental grant was not sufficient to cover the cost of running the present service. The following representative committee was elected: —Dalefield, Messrs D. Knutson and K. G. Fairbrother; Belvedere, Mr W. J. Thomas; Carrington, Mr W. Wilson; East Taratahi, Mr R. O. Rayner; Clareville, Mr Jas. Fisher; Parkvale-Waihakeke, Mr E. T. Bliss; Kokotau, Mr Geo. W. Hart; Ponatahi and sheep farmers, Mr E. G. Hart; poultry-keepers, Mr H. E. Ward; County Council, Mr A. E. Reid. Mr W. Wilson was appointed chairman, Mr W. J. Thomas secretary, and Mr E. T. Bliss delegate to the Central Council.
FIRE BRIGADE ANNUAL MEETING. Superintendent H. Matson presided over the annual meeting <>f the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade last evening. There was a full attendance of members, and visitors were present from Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The balance sheet showed a credit balance over the year’s working. The election of officers resulted as follow: —Superintendent, Mr H. Matson (re-elected); deputy superintendent, Mr H. G. Steffert; foreman, Mr T. Lipinski; motorman, Mr H. M. Catt; secretary, Mr L. M. Clarke; auditor, Mr H. M. B. Trapp; executive committee, Firemen C. J. Churchouse, R. J. Grimmer and S. McCarty. At the conclusion of the meeting a social gathering was held when several toasts were proposed. Deputy Superintendent W. J. Boston, Featherston, made presentations of 2year medals to Messrs H. M. Catt 121 years service), C. J. Churchouse (17 years), H. G. Steffert (17 years), R. F. Taucher (19 years), and B. Catt (9 years).
INTERESTING DEBATE WON BY WOMEN'S DIVISION TEAM. There was a very large attendance at the Masonic Hall, Carterton, last night, when a very interesting debate was held between a team of Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union members and the Young Farmers’ Club. Mesdames L. R. Maitland (leader), E. Ordish (second), and Walsh (third) took the affirmative in the debate, "Should Husbands help with Housework on Wet Days,” while the negative was supported by Messrs B. Brassell, H. Staples and T. McQueen. The debaters were in good form and were frequently applauded by the audience. The Rev. W. J. Couling was the judge and his award was given in favour of the ladies, which was well received.
A concert programme was enjoyed before the debate, much appreciated items being given by Misses McGhee, B. Ordish, B. Card, Mesdames K. Hodder, Linton, K. Hodder, McLean and Stretton. Miss Mary Herrick played the music for the dance which was held afterwards. Members of the division will help other women organisations tomorrow, in entertaining the American Band.
Rugby Union Meeting. A meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union will be held at Carterton tomorrow night at 6.30 o’clock. Art Union. “Why Worry,” Carterton. secured a £5 prize in “My Great Chance” art union drawn at Wellington yesterday. Football. The Carterton “B” grade team for Saturday is:—Catt (2), Kennedy, Phillips, George, Garrett, Chapman, Blake, McPhee, Hannah, Jury, Thomas, Taylor. Bird, Hurley, Forbes. The Carterton senior team, to play against Air Force at Carterton Showgrounds on Saturday will be chosen from the following:—Mason, Desmond, Groube, Hurndell, Humphries, Stringfellow, Mathieson, McPhee, Conwell, Tilyard, Playle, Parker (2), O’Neale, Bush, Mahupuku, McKenzie, Smith. Berry. White, Taylor, Reading. The team is asked to assemble at the Marquis Hotel at 1 o’clock, as the game must commence at 2 o’clock. Boy Scouts’ Card Party. The weekly card tournament conducted by the Boy Scouts’ Citizens’ Committee was held last evening. There was a good attendance, and the prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Mrs R. Banks 1, Mrs Ticehurst. Senr., 2. Men. Mr .Wadsworth 1, Mr D. Waterson 2. Personal Items. Mr C. W. Wadham, of Gisborne, son of Mr and Mrs W. Wadham, Brooklyn Road, Carterton, has received advice from London that he has passed his A.M.I.E.E. examination. Mr Geo. Hulley, of Auckland, who was employed at Messrs Deller & Co's meat mart many years ago, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. The late Mr W. Eagle, who died at the Grey town hospital yesterday, was educated at the Clareville school. In the football match against Warbrick’s Maori team at Masterton on August 19, 1889, he scored a sensational try for Wairarapa. The game was an excit-
ing one, the native team winning on the call of time by ten points to eight. He also won fame on the running track, and the contests between the late Archie D’Arcy and Dob Thompson, of Masterton, over 100 yards and 220 yards as well as other events in which the late Mr Eagle took part are remembered by old residents.
REGENT THEATRE A DOUBLE BILL. Tonight's double bill will be "Born to Sing,” an excellent musical comedy, featuring Virginia Weidler and Ray MacDonald, and "Bad Men of Arizona,” starring Richard Dix.
