LAST YEAR’S EARTHQUAKES

NEW FAULT DISCOVERED AT TAUERU. A new fault-step was found and traced in the Taueru Valley, cast of Masterton, and as its position corresponds well with the seismological data, movement along this fault is considered to have caused the earthquake of June 24 last year. This information is given in the annual report of the Department of) Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr M. Ongley and other geologists visited the Wairarapa district, following the earthquake and examined slips, slumps and other ground disturbances. The main shock reached an intensity on the Rossi-Forel scale of 9 plus at points cast and south-east of Masterton. A very severe after-shock occurred on August 2 and a third severe shock originated from the same region on December 2.
