BUT UTILE GROUND GAINED
In German East Front Offensive HEAVY ADDITIONAL ENEMY LOSSES OF TANKS AND AIRCRAFT ATTACKS IN NORTHERN SECTOR COMPLETELY DEFEATED BY RUSSIANS LONDON, July 7. In Russia, the Germans have continued to sacrifice masses of men and material in their onslaught on the Kursk salient. A special communique from Moscow states that the Ger- ’ mans have made some headway in the Byelgorod area but have paid a high price for this progress. In their northern thrust, the Germans have been unable to gain any ground in the face of stubborn Russian resistance. The Russians destroyed or put out of action 500 German tanks today, bringing the total to 1500 in three days. They also destroyed .229 German aircraft in today’s fighting and a recount of yesterday’s air battles shows that 217 enemy planes were destroyed instead of 111 as first reported. One report from Moscow states that it is expected the Germans will keep up the tempo of their attack for at least two or three days, even if their losses continue at the present rate.
