ENEMY ATTACK
LAUNCHED ON LONG FRONT SOVIET OFFICIAL REPORT. MUCH BOMB DAMAGE BEHIND GERMAN LINES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) RUGBY, July 5. The long-awaited offensive, launched between Moscow and Kharkov, cost nearly 600 tanks and over 200 planes today. A special Soviet communique states: “The enemy launched an attack this morning on a front of 180 miles, and fierce fighting continues.” Another special communique states: “Last night Soviet long-range aircraft raided the railway junctions of Gomel, Unecha and Roslavl. At Gomel trains, with troops and war material, and also ammunition dumps, were heavily bombed. Direct hits were scored and fires were started. At Unecha, military trains and dumps were bombed. At Roslavl, trains on a junction in the marshalling yards were bombed. Fires were started. All the Soviet planes returned to their bases.”
