SUCCESSFUL RAIDS

ON AIRFIELDS IN CRETE MADE BY BRITISH DETACHMENTS PLANES DESTROYED ON GROUND. MESSAGE TO ISLAND PEOPLE. LONDON, July 5. British troops last night made a series of raids on Axis airfields in Crete. A special communique from Cairo stales that the attacks were carried out by small forces. The operation was successful and all those engaged got back safely, after destroying a number of enemy aircraft on the ground.

It was an all-British operation. The people of Crete took no part in it and were not told of it owing to the risk of reprisals by the Germans. A special broadcast to the people of Crete today made this clear and asked them to remain quiet. The Germans might spread stories that an invasion had started, so as to impel the residents to action and then use this as an excuse for reprisals on the civilian population. The day would come, the broadcast stated, when the people. would be asked to rise and join the invading forces, but that day was not yet. The broadcast also stated: “The Germans know you have no responsibility for these raids. If they take action against you, they are committing a breach of international law and they know they will be punished for any outrages they commit.”
