MAY BE TRAPPED
JAPANESE AT MUNDA
STRONG GARRISON ONJSLAND.
BITTER FIGHTING EXPECTED
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 5.
The landing on Vangunu means that the Americans now hold positions on two sides of New Georgia Island. Allied bombers continue to pound the Munda area. An Australian war correspondent with the American fleet in the South Pacific suggests that the Japanese may be trapped at Munda just as they were trapped on Guadalcanal. The Japanese have up to 20,000 men available for the defence of this area, according to correspondents, and bitter fighting is expected.
