Hazelrigg, Savannah, Missouri, U.S.A. A Press Association message from Dunedin announces the death of Mr C. Stanley Smith, managing director of the Dunedin “Evening Star,” and a well-known figure in the New Zealand newspaper world for many years. The death occurred on Sunday of Mr James M. Brackenridge, formerly in the Post and Telegraph Department’s service. Mr Brackenridge was born in 1882, and had been connected with the P. and T. Department for the greater part of his adult life, having retired from the service on superannuation only six years ago. Mr Brackenridge was known throughout New Zealand as a bowler. As a member of the Newton Club he won the singles championship of the Dominion in 1921, and, with his father, won the Dominion pairs championship in 1922. In 1933 he was No. 3 in the winning four at the Dominion tournament. The death occurred recently at the Wellington Hospital of Mr Walter Leonard (Barney) Smith, after a short illness. Born in 1869 in Wellington, Mi- Smith was the son of the late Mr and Mrs H. F. Smith. He spent his early life in Wellington where he was a member of the Wellington Naval Artillery Volunteers and he played for some years for the Pirates Rugby Football Club, and later resided in the Wairarapa. In 1900 he and his wife moved to Petone. He was a prominent member of the Ancient Order of Foresters and became District Chief Ranger in 1910. He was a member of the Petone Brass Band and some years after moving to Lower Hutt in 1913 he became a foundation member of the Lower Hutt Municipal Band.
